"Making steady progress" a little background colour!
From Rebels to Royalty!
Leigh's crest shows symbols of strength representing two powerful families in Leigh's past. Before 1875, Leigh was three separate townships: Bedford, Pennington and Westleigh - with their emblems of shuttle, mullet and spearhead - hinting at some of the area's traditional trades and history. Linens produced by hand-loom weaving were important here before the large Victorian cotton mills came. In its time, Leigh has produced coal, cotton and cheese - Leigh cheese having once been a local delicacy from its rich dairy country.
The spearhead is another reminder that Leigh was once the scene of a skirmish in the Civil War, the rebellious district siding with parliament against the king! We're all rebels against the King in another sense. That's King spelt with a capital 'K' because it's God we're referring to. The laws of this King were never more famously spelt out than in the 10 commandments: 'You shall not lie, steal,' etc. These are commands we've all broken because our nature is in rebellion against God. In the Bible, God pleads with us to 'Be reconciled'. He's gone so far as to provide the basis for reconciliation in the death of His own Son, Jesus Christ. All who turn and receive Jesus by faith are those God is prepared to treat as royalty.
